In any economy people are looking to save money, even celebrities! Some celebrities consider themselves a brand and guess what? They are! Celebrities are able to attract huge media attention. In addition celebrities can have thousands even millions of people who will show up to see them perform or to listen to their speech. Sponsors know how valuable celebrities are and the influence some celebrities have on their audience. Although I am not quite sure if celebrities know the difference between sponsorship vs endorsement (I'll see if I could get some feedback from celebrities that are in my social network and will let you know), either way companies grasp at the opportunity to become sponsors of a celebrity's event. Here are some ways celebrities are using sponsorship to save money.
Nick Cannon wants sponsors to cover the cost for gifts bags for his birthday party. At $2,500 per sponsor to be in the gift bag, can you imagine how much money he's saving on using his own money to buy gifts for his guests. With guests like Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Will and Jada Smith, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, among many other attention-getters, sponsors will dance to the tune for the chance of becoming a sponsor of his event.
This is event is classified a little different; however keep in mind that it is still a real life event. Linsay Lohan seeks sponsors to cover the cost for her rehab. Here is an example of a celebrity either looking to save money, or, just like myself when I first started planning events, doesn't have the money to fund her event. It's good that there are companies and individuals who are able and willing to sponsor events that they care about without always expecting in return to be in front of a large audience. This type of sponsorship would be considered private sponsorship or private sponsors. Don't think for another minute that the sponsors are not benefiting (I believe I mentioned this in How-To Plan Sponsored Events Effectively & Secure Sponsors Successfully), this type of event causes a huge self gratifying impact on the sponsors.
Another person looking to save money on his birthday bash, Mr. LeBron James. Although it is stated that "King James is making $14.5 million in 2010" it doesn't hurt him to save half of a million dollars so that he can ball-out on his birthday.
If you are thinking that your event will not be as showbiz as Nick Cannon or as any other celebrities, remember the point here is it doesn't matter. People from all genres are looking to save money on events that they are passionate about.
